SUMMARY

  •  The Beekeeper starring Jason Statham has the lowest week 2 drop for a Statham movie since 2016.
  •  The movie is projected to earn an additional $8.4 million at the box office in its second weekend after opening with $16.6 million.
  •  The Beekeeper has exhibited a strong showing for a non-franchise Jason Statham movie.

The Beekeeper has broken a record of nearly a decade. The new action movie, which was directed by Suicide Squad‘s David Ayer, stars Jason Statham as Adam Clay, a beekeeper who is also a former member of a clandestine organization of elite fighters. When his close friend Eloise Parker (Phylicia Rashad) dies by suicide after being taken in by a fishing scam, Clay uses his skills to exact violent revenge on the company responsible. The movie also stars Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, and Jeremy Irons.

Per The Beekeeper release is projected to take in an additional $8.4 million by the end of its second weekend at the domestic box office. Given the fact that its opening weekend earned $16.6 million, this would be a week-on-week drop of just 49%. This would mark the lowest week 2 drop for a Jason Statham action movie since 2016, when The Mechanic: Resurrection dropped 40.5% after opening to $7.4 million.

How Does The Beekeeper Compare to Other Recent Jason Statham Movies Overall?

Statham’s record has been shattered by The Beekeeper, but success is relative. Because they were often already a part of well-known series with sizable fan bases, many of the earlier Jason Statham films had far bigger opening weekends and, despite their larger losses, had still made more money by a comparable point in their domestic runs. See The Beekeeper’s debut weekend and 10-day domestic gross below, along with comparisons to several of his previous films from the previous few years:

Title Opening Weekend 10-Day Domestic Gross
The Beekeeper (2024) $16.6 million ~$31 million
Expend4bles (2023) $8 million $13.3 million
Meg 2: The Trench (2023) $30 million $54.3 million
Fast X (2023) $67 million $107.9 million
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023) $3.1 million $5.5 million
F9: The Fast Saga (2021) $70 million $116.1 million
Wrath of Man (2021) $8.3 million $11.9 million

Success is not always assured by affiliation with a well-known business, as the total revenue for Expend4bles demonstrates. Indeed, The Beekeeper’s domestic box office receipts alone have now almost surpassed the film’s $37.9 million global total. But when it comes to sheer quantity, The Beekeeper just cannot match the likes of Fast Saga and The Meg franchise.

Nevertheless, The Beekeeper is doing quite well overall, as seen by the overwhelmingly favorable reviews and the unusually high box office receipts for a Statham action film. Additionally, it has made a lot more money at the domestic box office than his record-breaking film The Mechanic: Resurrection, which has only ever brought in $21.2 million. Its trajectory suggests that it will develop into a respectable mid-sized hit, which is quite an accomplishment for an unproven action product.
